Setting up your Aside

About five minutes. You only do this once. Afterwards the light runs itself from your calendar.

Have ready

  • The light and the power adapter from the box
  • Your phone
  • The name and password of your office Wi-Fi
  • The Google account whose calendar holds your sessions
  1. 1

    Plug it in

Put the light where you will see it from your chair, and plug it into the wall with the adapter from the box.

The ring flashes red, green, blue and white once, then settles into a slow blue blink . Blue blinking means "I need Wi-Fi."

  2. 2

    Give it your Wi-Fi

On your phone, open Settings → Wi-Fi. In the list of networks, tap the one called TherapyLight-Setup. It has no password.

A small page opens by itself. Tap Configure WiFi, tap the name of your office Wi-Fi, type its password, and tap Save.

Your phone will drop back onto its usual Wi-Fi on its own. On the light, the blue blinking stops and the ring goes dark . Dark is correct here: it is online and waiting for the next step.

No page popped up? Stay on the TherapyLight-Setup network, open your web browser, and type 192.168.4.1 in the address bar.

Still blinking blue after a minute? The password was probably mistyped. Unplug the light, plug it back in, and do this step again. Aside needs a normal 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; if your network has a "5G" name and a plain one, pick the plain one.

  3. 3

    Connect your calendar

Turn the light over. On the bottom is a small square code. Open your phone's Camera, point it at the code, and tap the link that appears.

A page titled Connect your Aside opens. Tap Connect Google Calendar and sign in to the Google account that holds your sessions.

You will see a screen that says "Google hasn't verified this app." That is expected: Aside is still in its testing period with Google. Tap the small Advanced link, then Go to … (unsafe). Google uses that wording for every app that has not finished its review, and Aside only ever asks to see when you are busy, never what your appointments are.

When Google asks for permission, tap Continue or Allow. If you have more than one calendar, pick the one your sessions live on and tap Use this calendar.

You will land on Your Aside is connected ✓. You can close that tab.

That's it

Within a minute the light is following your calendar. From now on it needs nothing from you.

The light treats anything marked Busy on your calendar as a session. Appointments marked Free, and most all-day events, are ignored.

Later on

Change the colors or the ten-minute warning

Scan the code on the bottom of the light again and tap Edit colors & timing. Changes apply within a minute. This page can change only colors and timing; it cannot see or touch your calendar.

Use a different calendar

Scan the code on the bottom of the light and tap Change calendar. You confirm with Google again and pick the new one.

Nothing happened when a session started

Check three things: the light is plugged in and not blinking blue; the appointment is on the calendar you picked in step 3; and the appointment is marked Busy, not Free. If all three are fine, email us and we will look at it with you.

New Wi-Fi, new office, or a new password

Email us before you move it. We will walk you through a two-minute reset so the light forgets the old network and you can repeat steps 2 and 3.

What does Aside see?

Only whether you are busy or free, and the names of your calendars so you can pick one. Never an appointment's title, who it is with, or any notes. Nothing about your clients leaves your calendar.

Stuck?

Email us and a person will reply. A photo of the light and a note on which step you were on is the fastest way to get help.
